About Hundred and Fifty (150) head porters known locally as Kayayes have been arrested by the Nkawkaw District Police Command in the Eastern Region.
The kayayes were being transported in a cargo truck from Accra to Northern Region ostensibly to escape lockdown of the national Capital, Accra as part of measures to contain coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.
Among the Kayayes fleeing were pregnant and nursing mothers.
The Cargo trucks were also loaded with head pans and other personal effects.
The Kayeyes told Nkawkaw based Agoo Fm that, they were stranded because they left Accra On Sunday but upon reaching Kumasi, security operatives who have mounted barriers bounced them to return to Accra since Greater Kumasi is also under lockdown.
The Nkawkaw Police have since impounded the Vehicles and arrested the Drivers as well.
Ghana has recorded 152 confirmed cases of coronavirus with five (5) fatalities as of March 29, 2020.
President of Ghana Akufo-Addo on Friday night of March 27, 2020, announced partial lockdown of the Nation’s Capital-Accra and Parts of Ashanti Region as an enhanced measure to prevent increasing community spread having closed down all Borders, Land, sea and Air space.
The lockdown took effect Monday, March 20, 2020.
