A 11-year old boy of Abepotia Presby School, Daniel Arhin has drowned in a stagnant mining pit at Ekawso, a suburb of Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region after sneaking out of school to swim with his friends.
The deceased, together with one other classmate sneaked out of school and joined two other community members to go on a swimming expedition in a portion of the Asuboni river that has been blocked by miners.
The students were given a 10minutes break from the preparations and rehearsals towards the school’s 75th anniversary which is scheduled to come off on Thursday when the two sneaked out to go and swim.
Odikro of Ekawso,Nana Kwabi Mireku, has revealed the mining concession originally belonged to Appolonia Mining Company Limited, a firm owned by Kwahu Obomeng hene, Nana Effah Opinaman but has been given out to some miners who are currently working on it.
He bemoaned the illegalities being perpetrated by these miners, one of which is the illegal blocking of rivers and streams and vowed to end their actions as soon as possible.
Speaking to some residents, they expressed their displeasure about the mining activities in the area and called on authorities to help deal with the situation to avert any other future incident.
The body has since been deposited at Holy family hospital at Nkawkaw.
