The Ghana Police service has upgraded the Kwahu Nkwatia District Police command to a Division to boost security for the tourism industry, investors and traders and residents in the area.
The Divisional Police Headquarters was commissioned on October 29, 2022, by the Eastern Regional Police Commander DCOP Anderson Fosu-Ackah on behalf of the IGP Dr George Akufo Dampare.
The office building for the new Divisional Police Headquarters was provided by Kwahu Kwatia Development Association whilst the Vehicle was donated by Nana Owiredu Wadie I to support the mobility of the police in its operations.
“Today, 29/10/22 is exactly one year since Nana Owiredu Wadie I was enstooled as the Nkosouhene of Kwahu Nkwatia. As part of activities to mark the 1 year anniversary, he decided to donate a brand new Toyota Hilux (2018 Model) to the newly commissioned Kwahu-Nkwatia Police Divisional Headquarters at Kwahu Nkwatia to help boost security for businesses to thrive” Dr Henry Larbi, Executive Director of Kabaka Foundation founded by Nana Owiredu Wadie I said.
The Kwahu area is the biggest tourist destination in Ghana.
Thousands of tourists throng the area every year for Easter and paragliding activities.
Many investors continue to build hotels, pubs and recreational centres in the area.
The Kwahu Afram Plains area is also a food basket for the country.
However, the area continues to face some security challenges.
Nana Baffour Agyare Yeboah Asuamah, Manwerehene of Kwahu Traditional Area who represented Kwahuhene Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II was optimistic the Divisional Police Headquarters will help deal with security issues such as robbery, clashes between nomadic herdsmen and farmers among others.
“The high importance of policing cannot be overemphasized. The spate of crime in the Kwahu Enclave caused mainly by the nomadic activities of cattle rearers is of great concern. To mention a few, we have armed robbery, rape and possible violent clashes between the Fulani herdsmen and crop farmers. I wish to state emphatically that these cattle rearers belong to the cattle ranches provided by the present government in Afram plains that is where they need to be I trust that commissioning the Divisional police command here will go a long way towards effective policing fighting this crime canker “.
Chief Superintendent Mariam Adu Osei is the first Divisional Commander posted to the Nkwatia Divisional Police Headquarters.
Residents including some traditional leaders are hopeful the new security arrangement will help deal with crime in the area through effective collaboration with stakeholders.
