Accra, May 19, 2025 — Following a wave of power outages across parts of Ghana after heavy rainfall on Sunday, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is urging the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control and not a return to the dreaded “Dumsor” era.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt 99.1 FM, the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Head of Communications, Lawyer Richmond G. Rockson, explained that the disruptions were isolated and weather-related, not indicative of a systemic power crisis.
“There is no cause for alarm,” Rockson stated, citing a recent briefing to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, in which the Energy Minister outlined ongoing structural reforms aimed at boosting the resilience of Ghana’s energy sector.
Rockson emphasized that Ghana currently has adequate fuel reserves to keep power generation steady, and there is no imminent threat to supply stability. “There is no risk of a fuel supply issue. Ghanaians should remain calm,” he reiterated.
He clarified that the recent outages were likely due to the heavy rains, which disrupted power infrastructure in several communities. However, he cautioned against conflating these events with the prolonged, scheduled power cuts that plagued the country in years past.
“This is not Dumsor,” Rockson stressed. “It’s an unfortunate but temporary situation caused by extreme weather. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will soon release an official statement to provide further clarity.”
Lawyer Rockson also used the opportunity to express confidence in the leadership of the current Energy Minister, highlighting his deep industry experience, including past roles as Deputy Minister and acting Power Minister.
“The President appointed him because of his proven track record and unwavering commitment to energy reform,” Rockson said.
He concluded by acknowledging the role of former President John Dramani Mahama in laying the groundwork for Ghana’s energy advancements, pointing to legacy infrastructure projects initiated during Mahama’s administration that continue to benefit the sector.
As the ECG prepares to issue its statement, Ghanaians are being urged to stay informed and avoid unnecessary panic—clear skies, it seems, lie ahead.
