The Government of Ghana has firmly pushed back against demands from the Minority in Parliament for the publication of a load-shedding timetable, dismissing the call as politically driven and lacking factual basis.
Lawyer Richmond G. Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and Business Advisory, addressed the issue in an interview on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt99.1FM, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
His remarks followed a press conference held a day earlier in Accra by the Minority Caucus, during which they accused the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, of failing to address the ongoing power outages—popularly known as Dumsor—and demanded an official load-shedding timetable to help citizens plan their lives.
But Rockson was unequivocal in his response, describing the Minority’s concerns as “unfounded and politically motivated.”
“The Minority is engaging in what I call nuclear politics—creating alarm without data,” he said. “Their claims lack substance. Ghana’s current installed power generation capacity exceeds our peak demand. We are not in a situation where a load-shedding timetable is justified.”
Citing figures to support his stance, Rockson explained, “If we had an installed capacity of 4,000 megawatts and demand rose to 5,000, then we would need to shed load. But that’s not the case. Our peak demand doesn’t even reach 4,000 megawatts. So where is the deficit that justifies a timetable?”
He further dismissed suggestions that fuel shortages were behind recent power interruptions, insisting that the government had maintained consistent fuel supply.
“While isolated outages have occurred, they are not part of any coordinated load-shedding plan,” Rockson clarified. “They are unplanned and technical in nature—not systematic. We are not in Dumsor.”
The exchange highlights the continued political tension over Ghana’s energy challenges, with the government seeking to reassure the public of stability, and the opposition pressing for transparency and accountability.
