Accra, Ghana – July 16, 2025
Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has declared that the nation’s once-troubled energy sector is firmly on the path to recovery, crediting a wave of reforms and strategic interventions for the significant progress made in recent months.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 16, Minister Jinapor announced that the era of widespread and erratic power outages — popularly known as “Dumsor” — is fast becoming a thing of the past.
“We can confidently announce that this energy sector is indeed showing signs of stabilisation and improvement,” he said. “This has been driven by ongoing reforms aimed at addressing both technical and financial challenges, as well as modernising infrastructure.”
The Minister noted that the unreliable power supply that plagued the country at the beginning of the year has seen a remarkable turnaround.
“We are now experiencing a much more reliable, uninterrupted supply of power — and you can attest to that fact,” he added.
Addressing recent public concerns over scheduled maintenance at the ENI gas facility, which many feared would plunge the nation into another blackout episode, Jinapor quipped that some citizens even dubbed the day “National Dumsor Day.”
“Fortunately, through the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders and our technical team, we were able to conduct that operation successfully without switching even one megawatt off,” he stated proudly.
He light-heartedly acknowledged the buzz on social media that followed, where Ghanaians humorously expressed “disappointment” that the lights never went out.
“Some joked that the Minister had forgotten to switch the lights off,” he laughed. “But it all attests to the importance of electricity in our daily lives.”
The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to not only sustaining the current momentum but also building a resilient, future-ready energy sector for all Ghanaians.
