The Ghana Police Service say no one nor vehicle has been shot in Assin North by-election.
This is contrary to viral disinformation that some persons and vehicles have been shot at by unknown thugs.
Police however acknowledged that there were pockets of violence in some polling stations.
According to police statement issued this evening, “voting within the Assin North Constituency commenced this morning and progressed as expected in all polling stations across the Constituency. The Police however recorded pockets of incidents, including an alleged incident of an individual shooting into the air”.
The statement stated that ” We wish to state that no person or vehicle has been shot at within the constituency. All the recorded incidents are being investigated and Police have also arrested some suspects who are in custody assisting our investigation”.
Police said “adequate Police personnel have been deployed throughout the constituency to ensure security law and order for the remaining period of the election and beyond. We would like to urge all stakeholders to redouble their commitment to work with the Police to ensure a peaceful election especially as the exercise draws to a close”.
The Assin North Parliamentary seat became vacant after the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 17, unanimously declared unconstitutional the election of James Gyakye Quayson as the MP for the area.
Parliament then wrote to the Electoral Commission declaring the seat vacant, giving way to this by-election.
Following this, the two parties have been actively campaigning in the constituency to win the coveted seat.
