There was no show in Somanya District Magistrate Court on the fourteen (14) persons arrested for performing puberty rite in Somanya.
The suspects were expected to be put before Somanya District Magistrate court Wednesday, May 5, 2020, but the case was not called.
Indications are that some top political figures in the area have intervened for amicable settlement as the arrest suddenly took political twist juxtaposing with an enrollment of Okuapehene over the weekend at Akropong.
The Somanya District Police Command in the Eastern Region arrested the fourteen (14) people for flouting restriction on public gatherings by performing “Dipo”.
The suspects have arrested on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at Sawer a suburb of the Yilo Krobo Municipality.
The suspects arrested are; Samuel Lawer Opata, 85, Tetteh Rebecca, 70, Korkor Esther, 45, Vivian Amish, 45, Grace Tetteh, 40, Bernice Tetteh, 38, Opata Mercy, 35, Nartey Eunice, 40, Lovelace Emmanuel Odonkor, 70, and five other Cchildrenages between 12 to 17 years.
According to the Somanya District Police Commander, DSP Isaac Kojo Otsin, Police received a tip-off that some residents of Sawer a suburb of Somanya have gathered in a house performing puberty rites known as DIPO as against the president’s restriction imposed on public gathering.
Police quickly rushed to the venue and arrested the organizers and participants.
DSP Isaac Otsin said, all the suspects were cautioned charge and granted court bail to appear before Somanya District Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
