Koforidua, January 30, 2025 – The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has engaged residents of Koforidua in an educational program focused on promoting the safe use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and addressing concerns over deforestation caused by excessive reliance on charcoal.
At the event, NPA Supervisor Mr. Johnson Gbagbo Jnr. highlighted the benefits of LPG, stating that it reduces exposure to harmful smoke and protects the environment by curbing deforestation.
He emphasized that adopting LPG as an alternative cooking fuel could significantly improve public health and environmental sustainability.
However, some attendees expressed concerns about the high cost of LPG, which they claim makes it difficult for many households to transition from charcoal to gas. The discussion also underscored the health risks of charcoal usage, particularly its links to respiratory and lung diseases, especially among young people.
To enhance safety and affordability, the NPA announced the introduction of a Cylinder Recirculation Program, aimed at making LPG more accessible while ensuring the highest safety standards.
Key Safety Guidelines for Gas Usage
As part of the engagement, the NPA provided residents with essential safety measures to prevent gas-related accidents:
Avoid Open Fires Near Cylinders: Residents were warned against lighting “kulport” fires near gas cylinders, as this could lead to explosions.
Radiation Risks: The public was advised that radiation from mobile phones could potentially ignite gas leaks, emphasizing the need for caution.
Ensure Proper Ventilation: Adequate airflow around gas cylinders is necessary to prevent gas buildup in enclosed spaces.
Handling Gas Leaks: If a gas hose or valve develops a leak, users were instructed to avoid attempting repairs themselves and instead seek professional assistance from their suppliers.
Leak Detection: Before using a gas cylinder, users should check for leaks by applying a soap solution to the valve and other joints.
Safe Ignition Practices: To prevent gas accumulation, the public was advised to light a match before turning on the gas.
Cylinder Placement: Both filled and empty cylinders should be kept away from open flames and flammable liquids.
Regulator Compatibility: Gas regulators must match the cylinder valve diameter to ensure a secure fit and prevent leaks.
The NPA reassured residents that discussions are ongoing to make LPG more affordable and accessible. The authority urged the public to adhere to these safety measures to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.
