The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is vehemently protesting the arrest and detention of party activist, Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The NPP alleges the arrest, which occurred at dawn on Friday, May 23, 2025, constitutes a violation of Kumi’s fundamental human rights.
According to NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, Kumi is currently being held at the NIB’s Kawokudi office in Accra. While the specific charges remain unclear, the NPP suspects the arrest is directly linked to a petition Kumi submitted to President Nana Akufo-Addo earlier this week.
The petition reportedly calls for the dissolution of a committee investigating the potential removal of the Chief Justice, citing allegations of misconduct among its members.
“We strongly believe this arrest is connected to the petition until the NIB provides an alternative explanation, Kodua told reporters Friday. He emphasized that regardless of the NIB’s rationale, Kumi is entitled to his basic human rights”.
