Theodore Kofi Aboagye, a prominent NPP supporter in Koforidua, has attributed the party’s poor performance in the December 7 elections in New Juaben South to recruitment fraud and perceived greed by individuals close to the Member of Parliament, Michael Okyere Baafi, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Ike Appaw Gyasi.
Aboagye alleged that some youth were deceived by people around the MP into paying large sums of money for job opportunities that never materialized.
He specifically mentioned Gideon Ampah, a former aide to the New Juaben South MCE, Ike Appaw Gyasi, who is currently on remand at the Koforidua Prison for allegedly defrauding several people in a recruitment scam.
According to Aboagye, this issue created widespread resentment among the youth, contributing to the NPP’s reduced votes. “Greediness and arrogance caused the NPP’s poor performance,” he stated.
In the 2024 presidential election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP) polled 29,830 votes in New Juaben South, a sharp decline from Nana Akufo-Addo’s 45,070 votes in 2020.
John Dramani Mahama (NDC) improved his tally, securing 26,261 votes compared to 22,884 in 2020.
For parliamentary , Michael Okyere Baafi (NPP): 32,134 votes
Martin Otu Offei (NDC): 23,735 votes
Evans Appiah (Independent): 1,306 votes
Michael Okyere Baafi’s votes also dropped significantly from his 2020 win of 47,862.
Aboagye says people were seething with anger hence didn’t vote in New Juaben South.
