John Boadu, a former general secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should be chosen as the party’s standard-bearer on November 4.
He claims that although he has not formally endorsed the vice president, he would want to if Dr. Bawumia wins.
“I am saying that I don’t support him, but I would like it if he wins,” he told host of Kokrokoo on Okay FM, Kwame Nkrumah Tikese in an interview.
Mr Boadu justified that “you know there’s someone you don’t support and would also be sad if he wins; maybe it is not in the interest of the party.”
He pointed out that having Dr. Bawumia as the front-runner will make it simpler to campaign for the general electorate, since other candidates who have criticized the government in their bids will find it challenging to do so once elected.
On August 26, 2023, the NPP held a special election with the goal of limiting the field of contenders for the party’s flagbearer from ten to five.
First-place finisher Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia received 629 of the total votes, or more than 68% of the votes that were considered genuine.
On November 4, 2023, the party will hold a general delegate election to choose a candidate to represent the party in the 2024 presidential election.
