Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) members are expected to pay President John Mahama a courtesy call in the coming days to ask for forgiveness for Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.
In an interview with Ekosii Sen of Asempa FM, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore in the Ashanti Region, revealed this.
Dr. Afriyie stated that Wontumi fully supports the initiative, although he did not specify the date of the visit or identify the delegation members.
“I spoke to Wontumi and suggested that we should go and beg, and he agreed. So we are ready to go and apologise to President Mahama. We will plead with him to exercise restraint,” he said.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is currently looking into allegations of financial offenses, including as money laundering and fraud, against Chairman Wontumi.
Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney-General, has also connected the case to a potential global organized crime organization.
After his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Wontumi was held by EOCO for almost six days. Every early effort to get him released on bail was unsuccessful.
On June 2, 2025, he was finally released on bail after fulfilling the requirements of GH₵50 million and providing two sureties to support his claims.
