The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has re-entered the political fray in the Ablekuma North Constituency, launching a vigorous campaign ahead of the parliamentary rerun slated for Friday, July 11, 2025. The rerun, which will take place in 19 polling stations, follows a directive from the Electoral Commission (EC) aimed at resolving disputes stemming from the December 2024 general elections.
This renewed campaign marks a dramatic reversal of the NPP’s earlier stance. The party had initially announced a boycott of the rerun, claiming its parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had already won the original vote with a margin of 414 votes. They further accused the EC of undermining the electoral process by calling for a rerun.
However, the NPP’s position shifted sharply following a July 7 decision by the Accra High Court, which dismissed an injunction application filed by Afriyie seeking to block the EC’s directive. With the legal route exhausted, the party has now fully re-engaged in the electoral process.
On the ground in Ablekuma North, Citi FM’s Fauzu Masawudu reports a surge of activity as NPP supporters hit the streets in numbers, engaging voters and canvassing support ahead of the pivotal rerun.
The rerun in Ablekuma North is part of broader efforts by the Electoral Commission to address allegations of irregularities in select constituencies following the tightly contested 2024 general elections. Although the EC has stood by its decision, the move has been met with legal challenges and strong political reactions, especially from parties claiming victory in the disputed polls.
