National Sports Authority boss, Prof. Peter Twumasi has debunked claims that his outfit has planned to sell the naming rights of the Accra Sports Stadium as well as other national stadia to generate funds.
According to Prof Peter Twumasi, Government facility renaming is not a mere thing to do because it is a legal matter hence the president is the only person who can decide that.
“Who even think and came out with this”? He asked.
“How can you just wake up to change the name, we don’t even have that right.”
“Is only the president who can decide that, is fake discard it.” – He added.
A report in the media space also suggests that NSA has planned to sell the naming rights to any private company and individual who express interest to serve as a means to raise funds to maintain the government-owned facilities.
It is also understood that the Sports Authority has set a price range between $1.5 million to 3 million for the naming rights to the Accra Sports Stadium and the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in particular.
In a related development, the family of celebrated sports administrator Ohene Gyan has petitioned the Presidency to have the name of the Accra Sports Stadium reverted to Ohene Gyan Stadium.
The Stadium was named the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium prior to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations tournament but was later changed to the Accra Sports Stadium in 2011 when a new government took over.
The family of the late Ohene Gyan says the right thing should be done for the name to be changed again.
