National Small-scale miners association are reacting to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ revocation of 278 licenses for regulatory violations and expired permits.
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources last week revoked 278 small-scale mining licenses nationwide, citing violations of mining regulations and expired operational permits.
The decision, announced by the Ministry’s Spokesperson forms part of the government’s renewed effort to bring order and accountability to the small-scale mining sector.
The revocation targeted operators who failed to meet environmental and safety requirements or continued mining activities beyond their license validity period.
The action, which reflects Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah’s stance on restoring discipline in the sector, follows years of government concern over illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and its impact on Ghana’s environment and water bodies.
However, Mr. Philip Bawa, operations director for National small scale miners Association speaking to newsmen has criticized the move as unfortunate and arguing its necessary for a sustainable framework also expressed concerns that this action will negatively impact their livelihoods.
Mr Bawa explained that the irregularities surrounding the revoked licenses were not caused by the legitimate miners but the regulatory body who failed to do their job diligently.
