The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees Association is expected to hold a press conference on the delay by the government in paying their allowance which has been in arrears for about 11 months.
The association will also speak about an outrageous increase in school fees making it difficult for many trainees to pay.
The association will also highlight the government’s failure to post the 2019 and 2020 batch of Nurses and Midwives who have graduated and done their national service.
The National Press conference to be held on July 14, 2022, will be used to voice out other issues affecting trainee nurses and Midwives in the country including anxiety over the cancellation of the Nurse and Midwife trainee’s allowance as continuing negotiation with IMF for economic support.
Teacher and nursing trainee allowances combined in projection are costing the government of Ghana some GHC401.1 million this year.
The former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah who was an Economic Management team member of the government has recommended that teachers and Nursing trainee allowance must be scrapped to save monies for development.
“Teacher and nursing training allowances should be scraped, it was a campaign message though but there were so many campaign messages that have not been fulfilled, your first term you did it fantastically. Mahama didn’t lose the election because of removing teachers and nursing allowances”
