An off-duty police officer has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man during a confrontation at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 18, 2024, around 4:00 a.m., following a dispute over a fare between the deceased, Stanley Ahadzi, and the officer, General Constable Smith Gyeke, who was working as a ride-hailing driver at the time.
According to police reports, the altercation escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. The body of the deceased has been transported to the Police Hospital morgue, where it is being preserved for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, General Constable Gyeke has been taken into police custody as investigations into the incident continue.
In the aftermath of the incident, Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, along with members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), visited the family of the deceased to offer their condolences.
Dr. Dampare assured the family that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that the officer involved will face justice.
To support the family during this difficult time, a police clinical psychologist and other officers have been assigned to provide emotional and psychological assistance.
The police have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that justice is served, emphasizing that the case will be handled with the utmost seriousness and transparency.
