Minister of Lands and Natural minister, John Abu Jinapor joined officials of Golden Star Resources Ltd. and Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining Co. Ltd at Akyempem in the Wassa East District of the Western Region, for the official handing over of the Golden Star Wassa Mine to Chifeng Jilong.
The mine, which covers a total surface area of approximately 52.89km2, has the capacity to produce about one million ounces of gold within a six-year period if we put in the right investment. Chifeng, an international mining company of great repute, has assured that it will put in the necessary investment to realize the full potential of the mine.
As part of the conditions for the taking over of the mine, Chifeng will list on the Ghana Stock Exchange, honour all existing contracts, including employment contracts entered into by Golden Star Resources, and implement the existing development agreements with the host communities.
The minister assured the workers of the mine, that the Government of President Akufo-Addo, will work with the new company to ensure that their rights are protected, and where necessary, appropriate severance packages are paid in accordance with the laws of our country, and the existing collective bargaining agreements.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to utilizing our natural resources for the benefit of the good people of Ghana.
“We are determined to work tirelessly, with courage and integrity, to make Ghana the undisputed mining hub of Africa, where mining and mine support services thrive in accordance with the highest health and safety standards” he insisted.
