The opposition National Democratic Congress has urged market women in Koforidua to ignore falsehood peddled by their Member of Parliament Michael Okyere Baafi over e-levy.
The NDC said this Thursday when they embarked on counter engagement with the market women and taxi drivers on Thursday, February 17, 2022, following similar engagement by the MP Michael Okyere Baafi who made various assertions which the NDC say was to throw the dust into eyes of the traders on e-levy.
The NDC told the market women that, Free SHS will not be canceled in the absence of e-levy. Also, the NDC said the minority does not support the e-levy at all hence cannot be an axiom that they support it covertly.
The Eastern Regional Communication Officer of the NDC Dallas Ampomah Williams who led the team said
“Research has it that about 76% of Ghanaians are not in agreement of the obnoxious atotobotom e- levy. About 56% of the NPP fanatics are also not in agreement with the passage of the obnoxious atotobotom e-levy and so instead of the honorable member being honest with the people of Koforidua and for that matter New Juaben South he chose to peddle untruth and you know the chamber of parliament is a house of records and so we expect higher standards from an honorable member of parliament of his caliber, unfortunately, he threw caution to the dogs and wore the apparel of a serial caller and lied to the people of New Juaben South but I am happy that we have been able to bring to control and clear that untruth today and everyone that listened to us in the last few minutes is clear on the mind that the honorable member of parliament Michael Okyere Baafi peddled an untruth”.
Dallas Ampomah Williams continued, “We also made it clear to the women that the honorable members on the side of the NPP demonstrated how they are going to chop the e- levy in an unlikely event that it is passed and we are forced to pay, and it was evidence in the last birthday party of the Honourable majority leader Osei Kyei Mensah, they exhibited how they are going to chop the money and so we encouraged the women to support the NDC and other civil society organizations that are fighting against the introduction of this “atotobotom” task that whenever we need their support to send a signal to the government that enough is enough they should be ready to join us to send.”
Commenting on claims by Pollster Ben Ephson that, the NDC is against e-levy because it will help NPP retain power, Dallas Ampomah Williams said, Ben Ephson has lost credibility in electoral research hence must not be taken seriously.
“For me, I always say pollsters like Ben Ephson the least said about him the better because he is an arm chaired pollster, he will sit in the comfort of his office, put on the air conditioner and decide to throw out noise without facts.
The e-levy is not about NDC, is not an NDC thing, it is a Ghanaian thing and the good people of Ghana are against and so for somebody to reduce this all-important message to NDC or NPP, it tells you the poverty of his thinking”.
Meanwhile, market women at the Juaben Serwaa Market furiously called on President Akufo Addo to drop the e-levy.
According to them, the levy will burden them, worsened hardship being experienced in the country, and will have a serious effect on their business which they are even struggling to repay loans with interest.
