The former Minister for the defunct Special Development Initiatives, Honourable Mavis Hawa Koomson has said 42 Warehouses have been fully completed and eight others were between 80 and 90 percent done as of October 2020 when she got a report from the consultant.
She said the completed ones include one in Sandema, two in Tamale, and two in Techiman and Eight has also been completed in the Western and Western North Regions.
Madam Koomson who is now the ministerial nominee for Fisheries and Aquaculture observed her vetting in Parliament on Thursday, February 18, 2021.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut sod for work to begin on the first warehouse project in Ejura in the Ashanti Region on 19th October 2017.
The warehouse project is a component of the government’s Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP).
Warehouses are to be constructed in the 242 districts to handle produce and store the anticipated surpluses under the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative and the construction of the warehouses in all districts would not only minimize post-harvest losses but also improve the marketing of agricultural produce.
The warehouses would help address poor farm-level practices, handling, and storage activities that exposed farm produce to molds, rodents, and other pests.
The construction of warehouses was part of the government’s “One District, One Warehouse” initiative under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP) to among other things reduce post-harvest losses.
The provision of storage was to essentially ensure a continuous flow of agricultural produce, create opportunities along the agriculture value chain and also support the implementation of the government’s “Planting for Food and Jobs” initiative.
