Accra, Ghana – February 18, 2025 – The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared former Minister of Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, a wanted person and a fugitive from justice after he failed to indicate a reasonable time for his return to Ghana for investigations.
In a statement released on February 12, 2025, the OSP announced that Mr. Ofori-Atta was under investigation for suspected corruption and other related offenses. Despite being notified of the allegations, he did not comply with directives to appear in person for questioning at the OSP’s headquarters in Accra.
However, on February 18, 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta, through his legal team, communicated a definitive date for his voluntary return to the country. The OSP considered this development a significant shift from his previous stance of remaining outside the jurisdiction indefinitely.
Following this assurance, the OSP acknowledged Mr. Ofori-Atta’s commitment and deemed his stated return date reasonable. As a result, the Special Prosecutor rescheduled his mandatory appearance at the OSP to align with his new timeline. Consequently, the OSP has removed Mr. Ofori-Atta from its list of wanted persons and no longer considers him a fugitive from justice, provided he adheres to his stated return date.
The OSP has warned that if Mr. Ofori-Atta fails to return as promised or does not attend his rescheduled hearing, he will be reinstated on the wanted list and once again treated as a fugitive. The office further stated that it would take all necessary legal steps to ensure his return and compliance.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, reaffirmed the OSP’s commitment to ensuring accountability, upholding due process, and maintaining fairness in the fight against corruption.
