A terrifying fire at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School in the Oti Region left several students collapsing on Tuesday morning as flames ravaged one of the boys’ dormitory rooms, causing widespread panic on campus.
The fire broke out around 9:00 a.m. on December 2, completely destroying a room in the dormitory block. The flames consumed all the personal belongings in the room and caused significant damage to the building’s roof, leaving the area severely affected.
Efforts to control the fire were delayed due to equipment issues. Firefighters, who rushed to the scene, found themselves unable to use the district’s fire tender as it was non-functional. In the absence of proper firefighting equipment, they were forced to use improvised methods to try and contain the blaze, which allowed it to spread more quickly.
As smoke filled the air, panic swept through the campus. Many students frantically rushed to help evacuate valuables from nearby rooms. School authorities, with support from local community members, acted quickly to assist the affected students. Those who collapsed due to the stress of the fire received immediate medical attention and are reported to be stable.
Thankfully, despite the chaos, no lives were lost in the incident, but the fire caused significant distress among students and staff alike.
