Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former president, John Dramani Mahama has said that the current health insurance system has made it difficult for Ghanaians to access quality health care.
According to him, if Ghanaians elect again, he will implement a new program to supplement the National Health Insurance Scheme.
He said that the free primary health care for all Ghanaians would be under a special arrangement to be managed by the National Health Insurance Authority.
On his four days’ tour of the Upper West Region, while addressing chiefs in Wa, the formal president said the free primary health care is a program they are going to implement and supervised by the NHIS.
“My free primary healthcare program will comprise with CHPS compound, polyclinics, and health centres to enable Ghanaians to have access to free healthcare whether they possess a national health insurance card or not.” He added.
He further added that National Health Insurance Scheme makes it difficult for Ghanaians to obtain this objective because the payment of premiums at the lower rank of the health delivery system makes it difficult for everybody to be able to access quality healthcare.
