On Tuesday, 20th August 2024, President Akufo-Addo delivered the keynote address at the 12th Quadrennial Delegates Congress of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region.
This event was a significant moment as the country reflected on the remarkable contributions of the TUC in fostering industrial peace and harmony within our labour sector.
According to the president, “Over the past seven years, my government has worked closely with Organized Labour to resolve industrial disputes amicably, ensuring a stable environment that supports economic growth and job creation”.
“Our efforts have been fruitful, with initiatives like the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) providing employment opportunities for over 700,000 young Ghanaians since 2017”.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted his government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers and pensioners across the nation.
He indicated “Notably, we have made substantial improvements to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) scheme, including a 25% increase in pensions in 2023—the highest since the introduction of the contributory Three-Tier Pension Scheme. This demonstrates our dedication to ensuring that our senior citizens are well supported in their retirement.
Additionally, the growth of pension assets, which have increased by over 350% from GH¢15.7 billion in 2016 to GH¢71.69 billion in 2024, is a testament to our commitment to safeguarding the future of all Ghanaians”.
