Telecommunication giant MTN Ghana is urging its customers to register their SIM cards ahead of the July 31st deadline by the National Communication Authority, NCA.
By the National Identity Registration Regulations, 2012 – L.I. 2111, Section 7(1)(l), NCA directed for re-registration of all SIM cards using the Ghana Card as the only identification document.
According to NCE, the SIM re-registration will ensure the development of a SIM database with integrity, which will help in the prevention of fraudulent activities, and the protection of SIM card-based transactions. Additionally, it will aid in determining the specific number of legitimate SIM cards on the various networks at every point in time.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Mobile Money Services Mr. Eli Hini said at a stakeholders engagement held in Koforidua that, over 6 million MTN customers out of 17 million who have their Ghana cards have not done bio-data capture of the SIM card registration process.
“As of now the data available indicates that close to 17 million customers have been able to link their cards which means that these customers have their Ghana cards and out of the total number of customers who have their Ghana cards only 10 million customers have gone through the bio- capturing process leaving over 6 million customers who haven’t gone through the bio-capturing process”.
He urged the customers that all their Service centers across the country are available for the SIM card re-registration exercise therefore customers should take advantage to register their SIM cards before the end of 31st July 2022.
Mr. Eli Hini however said engagements are ongoing to seek amnesty for customers who do not have their Ghana cards yet
