Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on day five of its sitting was the Registrar General’s Department under the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Works and Housing, Ministry of Creative Arts and Culture, Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations among others.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. James Klutse-Avedzi, the MP for South Dayi Hon. Rockson Dafeamekpor and some of the Committee where not enthused about the huge sums of money the government is spending on renting accommodation for officers at Ghana Embassies abroad.
The Members of the Committee started pouring out their sentiments when the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, led the Director and Senior Officers from the Ministry to respond to infractions cited by the Auditor-General in its 2020 Reports.
The Auditor-General stated in its 2020 report that an amount of $2.8 million and £I.79 million have been used to rent accommodation for Foreign Affairs Officers of 21 missions.
The Auditor-General described the payment of these rents as uneconomic and recommended that the use of mortgage system would be better.
However the Deputy Minister noted that government is trying to raise funds to acquire permanent or cheaper offices for all Ghanaian missions abroad. He said government is in the process of considering accessing funds from Societe Generale for this purpose.
