The Select Committee on Youth and Sports has embarked on a monitoring exercise to three sports stadia in the Greater Accra Region namely Borteyman Sports Complex, the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, and the Accra Sports Stadium.
Led by its Chairman, Hon. Henry Ernest Norgbey, the Committee began its visit at the Borteyman Sports Complex. Key challenges identified includes the absence of electricity due to unpaid arrears, limited activity resulting from few sporting events, poor management and maintenance, and issues with the underground drainage system beneath the pitch.
At the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, the management of the facility briefed members on their operations. Challenges highlighted were infrastructure defects, the high cost of replacing damaged equipment, inadequate maintenance tools, and stakeholder interference.
The Committee concluded its exercise at the Accra Sports Stadium, which is currently undergoing maintenance. Major concerns noted were faulty water systems, defective floodlights, scoreboard, and unsuitable washroom facilities.
The Committee applauded the Management of the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana for their efforts in maintaining their respective Stadia. The Chairman assured that the Committee would engage the Ministry of Sports to address the challenges identified across the various stadia.
