The presentation of the 2025 First Quarter Budget has been delayed once again, as the Finance Minister failed to appear in Parliament for the third consecutive day.
Parliament convened on Monday to deliberate on the crucial budget proposal, but proceedings have stalled due to the absence of the outgoing government’s finance minister.
Members of Parliament from the NDC caucus have expressed growing frustration over the delay, citing the urgent need to address economic concerns and ensure the smooth functioning of the government.
This postponement has raised questions about the commitment of the outgoing administration to fulfilling its fiscal responsibilities as it nears the end of its term.
“This is unacceptable. Parliament has been sitting for days, yet the Finance Minister has not shown up to present the budget. This is not just a failure of duty but a disregard for the country’s financial stability”, an opposition MP complained.
The delay has also sparked concern among economic analysts, who warn that failing to present and approve the budget in a timely manner could disrupt government operations and public services.
As the nation waits for clarity, the delay adds to a growing sense of uncertainty surrounding the government’s ability to manage its remaining responsibilities effectively.
For now, Parliament remains at a standstill, with no clear resolution in sight.
However, government workers will be at risk if the House fail to work on the budget, as it would be difficult for the next NDC government to pay January-March salaries.
