Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister-designate has said that he would attempt to reinstate road tolls in order to raise money for upkeep.
This guarantee was provided by Dr. Ato Forson when he was vetted before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The Ajumako Enyan Essiam MP indicated that the NDC has always supported road toll collecting, which is why they plan to revive it, although he did not specify any timeframes.
“The NPP submitted a concession agreement to Parliament to reintroduce road tolls, but it was not laid” he said.
Citing remarks made by Haruna Iddrisu, the MP for Tamale South, Dr. Forson underlined that the NDC has maintained its stance on road tolls.
“We are not running away from this promise. We are a party that honours its commitments, and if road tolls are a means to raise revenue, we will implement them,” he assured.
Dr. Forson further argued that road toll collection is a globally accepted practice and a vital source of funding for road maintenance.
“If you use the road, you pay a toll. It is a standard practice worldwide. Ghana will not be the first or last country to adopt this,” he explained.
The emphasis, he continued, would be on making sure that tolls were collected effectively and efficiently, with all proceeds going toward preserving the nation’s road system.
