At the beginning of every Meeting of Parliament, the Public Affairs Department organises media encounter for the Leadership of the House and the members of the Parliamentary Press Corps.
The main purpose of the encounter is to afford the Press Corps the opportunity to ask the leaders questions about the Agenda for that particular meeting of Parliament.
Today’s encounter was attended by the Majority Leader Hon. Osei kyei Mensah Bonsu, the Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Chief Whip Hon. Frank Annoh- Dompreh. The rest were the Minority Leader, Hon. Ato Forson and the First Deputy Minority Whip Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim.
The Majority leader hinted that the House would consider a number of Bills, Instruments, referrals, private members motions, and approval of some financial agreements.
He mentioned that this year marks 30 years of the Fourth Republic and Parliamentary Democracy. According to him, Ghana has done tremendously well but there is more room for improvement.
He added that, Parliament, to commemorate this anniversary is putting together a programme which would be unveiled in the course of this third session.
The Minority Leader, Hon. Ato Forson used the opportunity to brief the Press how the Minority Caucus intends to work closely with the media to achieve its purpose for the party and the country as a whole.
He urged the media to be diligent in their reportage by transmitting parliamentary proceedings accurately.
He also called on the media to assist Parliament to play its oversight role on the Executive in ensuring that the interests of the people are upheld.
Other issues discussed include the implementation of the New Standing Orders, the attempt by Parliament to tackle climate change issues, delayed Bills such as the Affirmative Action Bill and the current status of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
