Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has emphasized the importance of the Legislature as a governing body.
He asserts that as the House is a reflection of Ghanaian democracy, it should not be taken for granted.
He made this statement on Tuesday, October 29, during the Job 600 building’s commissioning in Accra.
“If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the Parliament – which is the mirror of democracy that is the focus – that should be strengthened. Because, apart from law making it, is parliament that has the only function of oversight, and it is parliament that should ensure that our collective efforts in terms of energy, in terms of resources, in terms of trust, is appropriately applied to the benefit of everyone,” he said.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Bagbin stated that Parliament reflects the voice of the people and holds the government responsible to the people, embodying the concepts of representation, accountability, and governance.
“So strengthening Parliament is not just the duty of Parliament, but of everybody and we have to work together to make sure that our people don’t suffer and struggle to elect us in vain.”
The Speaker also urged the strengthening of Parliament in all its branches and urged Ghanaians and stakeholders to appreciate and uphold the institution’s role in forming the country’s democratic framework.
