The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko and four other Ghanaian lawmakers and a clerk are currently caught up in Kenya Parliament as protestors besieged the house Tuesday afternoon.
The parliamentarians are Emmanuel Gyamfi the chairman, Nii Lantey Vandapuje, Thomas Ampem, Sylvester Tetteh and Mohammed Tuferu.
Anti-Finance Bill protesters in their hundreds on Tuesday afternoon violently besieged Kenya Parliament
The protesters entered inside Parliament hours after police shot a number of demonstrators outside Parliament Buildings.
The protesters also burned a number of vehicles belonging to the Police as tension escalated outside the country’s legislature.
Moments earlier, MPs had voted to approve the Finance Bill, 2024 that the argued imposes a wave of taxes.
This is the first time in the history of Kenya that protesters have broken barriers and accessed inside Parliament despite heavy security.
The Ghanaian parliamentarians with the Local government committee are in Kenya with their counterparts from Namibia and Malawi for study visit.
They were in Parliament when the protested besieged the house.
“We are safe in Nairobi. We were lucky to escape unhurt today. We, however, inhaled a bit of teargas. We had to be escorted to a bunker and later to a safer place” Nii Lantey Vanderpuje said.
Asuogyaman MP Thomas Ampem Nyarko also said, they were yet to be evacuated from their safe haven to their hotel.
