At the last sitting of the third meeting of the Second Session of the Eight Parliament, Lands and Natural Resources minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor made a statement on the recent earth tremor which occurred in various parts of the Greater Accra Region on 12th December, 2022.
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority, the agency under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, responsible for monitoring earthquakes and tremors, recorded three significant occurrences at 11:49am, 11:53am and 11:58am, with magnitudes of two point three (2.3), three point six (3.6) and two point two (2.2), respectively.
In his Statement, the recounted the history of earthquakes and tremors in the country, from the 1st recorded incident of 18th December, 1636 to the two tremors recorded in Botianor and Kpando last year.
He emhasised that Government is putting in place the necessary measures intensify our earthquake preparedness and response system.
Hon. Abu Jinapor retreated there are eight ( network seismic monitoring stations, located in Akosombo, Asankragua, Ho, Kukurantumi, Lake Bosomtwi, Saltpond, Shai Hills, and Weija, and connected to the National Seismic Observatory at Achimota by satellite transmission.
“We are, however, working with the relevant agencies and partners to convert the satellite system of data transmission to cell modem transmission system, which has proven to be more reliable and easier to operate”.
“The Government of President Akufo-Addo does not take the safety and security of the Ghanaian people for granted” Hon. Jinapor stated.
He added that “Already, a ten (10) member committee is working to draw up a Framework for Refocusing Ghana’s Earthquake Preparedness and Response.Despite the global economic hardships, Government is committed to continue to resource, retool, and position the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to provide real time monitoring and information on earth movements”.
Later in the day, the minister contributed to the debate on the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which seeks to enhance Government’s revenue mobilisation efforts for socio-economic development.
