The Eastern Regional Capital Koforidua was put under temporal lockdown on Saturday, April 4, 2020, as the National Disinfestation Team reached the Region.
Dozens of Police barriers were mounted restricting movements of vehicles to and fro the regional Capital. Stores were put under lock, while food sellers were barred from selling. Hawkers were blocked from trading, while markets in both New Juaben North and South were shut.
Generally, many residents complied with a directive issued by the New Juaben North and South Municipalities not to open shops.
The brisk business environment of Koforidua turned Ghost town as the sounds from spraying machines and drones could only be heard while a cacophony of hawkers and traders muted by stay home order.
The disinfestation exercise went on successfully without any hindrance.
The Juaben Serwaa Market which is the main market center was disinfested while other markets including Agartha Market, Koforidua Zongo Market, Effiduase market among others benefitted from the exercise. By midday, the exercise had ended but streets were still empty.
In all 200 market centers were expected to be disinfested across the region.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development also Member of Parliament for New Juaben North, Nana Adjei Boateng said the nationwide disinfestation exercise is to enhance hygiene in market centers amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
He said the Eastern region is the 10th region to benefit from the exercise hoping by close of next week the team will cover all the 16 regions in Ghana.
Present at the disinfestation exercise in Koforidua was Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Hon. Eric Nana Agyeman-Prempeh, Regional Director of NADMO-Kwame Appiah Kodua, National Youth Organiser of NPP Henry Nana Boakye, Municipal Chief Executives for New Juaben North and South -Comfort Asante and Isaac Appaw Gyasi respectively.
