Mr. Samuel Bekoe, a member of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), has reaffirmed the committee’s independence from government interference. Speaking in an interview on Adekyee Mu Nsem on Bryt FM with host Nana Yaw Obeng, Mr. Bekoe explained that PIAC is made up of independent institutions and individuals, and the government has no authority over its operations or membership.
“PIAC is composed of 13 members, none of whom are appointed directly by the government,” Mr. Bekoe stated. “Each member is nominated by their respective institutions, and the committee internally selects a representative among them to serve as a spokesperson or leader.”
He further elaborated that the membership is rotational and based on term limits. Some institutions nominate members for a term of three years, while others may serve two years with an option for renewal, making it a four-year term in some cases.
Mr. Bekoe listed the institutions represented on the committee, including:
Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Association of Ghana Industries
Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), which focuses on oversight in the gold and oil sectors
National House of Chiefs (Chieftaincy and Queen Mothers)
Christian and Muslim religious bodies
Civil Society Organizations
Ghana Journalists Association (GJA)
Ghana Bar Association
“Each of these groups nominates one representative to serve on PIAC,” he explained.
The PIAC was established to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of Ghana’s petroleum revenues. Mr. Bekoe emphasized that the committee remains committed to this mandate, operating independently and in the interest of the Ghanaian public.
