Police cells in Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital are full due to the rejection of remand prisoners by the Koforidua prisons.
The Koforidua Prisons has for many months refused to accept remands due to the stoppage of Covid-19 testing by the Ghana Health Service.
Previously, all new inmates were quarantined for 14 days, tested and code generated for them by the GHS. However, this process has been suspended.
As a result, the Koforidua prisons are not accepting suspects remanded by courts.
The situation has therefore resulted in all Police cells being full.
Police investigators have been moving around looking for space to squeeze their suspects till the next court dates.
This has led to overcrowding in the limited cells in the Regional Capital.
