The Akyem Kwabeng District Police Commander DSP Opoku Yamoah went berserk Tuesday over bribery allegations by some community members in Akyem Abomosu in the Eastern region.
Some residents accused the Akyem Kwabeng Police of an attempt to extort Ghc25,000 each from seven (7) illegal miners were arrested by alleged National Security Operatives on Monday, May 31, 2021.
The suspected illegal miners were arrested by the alleged operatives led by a popular miner known as Jagabo on the Birim River using Chanfai mining equipment to engage in illegal alluvial mining.
According to some residents, anytime these alleged National security operatives arrest illegal miners in the area, they connive with the police to allegedly extort monies from the suspects and eventually set them free.
Brother to one of the suspects arrested Monday told mybrytfmonline.com that, the police was allegedly demanding Ghc25,000 from each suspect for their release.
“They were arrested yesterday around 4:30pm by people who said they are national security. Now they are in Police Custody. The police say we should bring Ghc25,000 but we have managed to get GHc4,000. The Police say of we are not able to get the money by close of today to tomorrow 9:00am they will be sent to court for them to be jailed“ Cossy said.
In an attempt to get a reaction from the Kwabeng District Police Commander, the commander surprisingly fumed that the allegations were frivolous and nonsense.
“They can go to hell. If they are wise they should wait till I release them before they come out with all manners of allegations. I wise person can wait for me to release them before they come out with an allegation. what is that! People will not assist the police but if we struggle with our limited resources and everything they shouldn’t come and worry us with this nonsense. They should give us clue to arrest these people but they don’t do it. Look here I’m a police officer, if I want money I know how best to get money. Me, I don’t much money. They can speculate, the people are in Custody”. Angry DSP Opoku Yamoah said.
The District Chief Executive for Atiwa West, Isaac Asamoah, has also contacted the Police Commander over similar allegations creating tension in Akyem Abomosu.
Mybrytfmonline.com has gathered that the suspects will be put before the court Wednesday, June 2, 2021 after the alarm was brown over an attempt to extort from the suspects.
