A police officer has drowned in an anti-galamsey operation in Sefwi Bodi district in the Western North region of Ghana.

A statement issued by Police says an investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding the drowning of the Police officer at Sefwi Amoaya community.
“Preliminary report indicates that the deceased Police Corporal was part of a Police team on anti-Illegal Mining Operation duty around the River Sui when the unfortunate incident happened.
Whilst investigations continue, the Police Administration wishes to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and the Service as a whole” the statement concluded
Meanwhile, the Council Chairman of Koforidua Technical University, Professor Samuel Apori, has called for bipartisan support for the government to be resolute to burn, destroy tools, implements, and machinery and prosecute illegal miners and their collaborators irrespective of their political, religious, and socioeconomic status.
Prof. Apori who is also Chief of Akyem Hemang and an environmental activist also urged the regulatory bodies whose duty is to police, safeguard and ensure the protection of water, the environment, and the mineral resources of the state to be fearless and efficient in the discharge of their mandate.
“The president and his government should be assisted on a bipartisan basis to be resolute to burn, destroy tools, implements, machinery and prosecute galamseyers and their collaborators irrespective of their political, religious, and socioeconomic status.
