The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Kwakye, has made a passionate appeal to the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) and the government to soften their stances and reach a compromise to end the ongoing strike actions in the Colleges of Education.
Speaking at the 16th congregation ceremony of the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education, Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye emphasized that the current situation is crippling the institutions and their academic activities.
He stressed that a resolution is crucial for the resumption of academic work.
On Friday, June 14, 2024, CETAG declared an indefinite strike over the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s Arbitral Award Orders and negotiated service conditions. The strike affects all 46 public colleges of education in Ghana and aims to push the government to meet CETAG’s demands.
These demands include the payment of one month’s salary to each member for additional duties performed in 2022 and the application of agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities to deserving CETAG members.
During the congregation ceremony, Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye urged both CETAG and the government to resolve the impasse as soon as possible to prevent the closure of the colleges. He also challenged the new teachers to remain faithful, continue reading, and broaden their knowledge base.
The Principal of Kibi Presbyterian College of Education, Rev. Dr. Charles Ofosu Ayarkwah, highlighted the progress made in the college and outlined some urgent infrastructure needs.
Additionally, a senior lecturer at KNUST, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong, expressed concern over the rise in moral decadence in society and called on the new teachers to help address the situation.
