The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye has admonished electorates to approach this year’s elections with integrity devoid of any inducement.
According to the Moderator , “the increasingly polarized political atmosphere characterized by the two major political parties the NDC and the NPP with the objective to win vote through dubious means threatens the integrity of our elections and democracy and could lead to governance by those with dubious intentions”.
“Voters should seek candidates with generally aim to improve national condition rather than those driven by personal aim”
“we are also alarmed by the growing trend of monecracy threatening the integrity of our elections and could lead to governance with those with dubious intentions”
“reject monecracy and we must actively participate and vote against those who attempt to buy their way into power”
“instead vote for candidates who prioritize national projects over personal gain” Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye noted.
The Moderator made the disclosure during the 24th General Assembly held at Ramseyer Training Centre – Abetifi, Kwahu in the Eastern region.
Addressing the congregants on what he described as important national issue of greatest concern to the Presbyterian Church, the Moderator underscore the failure of successive government to address Ghana’s corruption perception index.
Deliberating on the 2023 Corruption Perception Index released by Transparency International in collaboration with Ghana Integrity Initiative which ranked Ghana 70th out of 180 countries , the Moderator attributed the stagnation and poor performance to the seat of the judiciary.
He said “the judiciary being implicated in the report is a continues erosion of trust in the judiciary and may have consequences on the country”.
With reference to a statement made by the Special Prosecutor Mr. Kissi Agyebeng during his lecture at the University of Ghana expressing doubt about Ghana’s readiness to combat corruption, the Moderator described it as troubling and further called on government to intensify effort to strengthen it institutions in the fight against corruption.
Finally, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye noted with deep concern the persistence conflict in Bawku , Nkwanta ,Alavanyo and the rest as well as the recent report of killings and mysterious deaths being record in some parts of the country particularly in Wa and surrounding areas as worrying.
Hence , the Presbyterian Church of Ghana urged the Law Enforcement Agencies to expedite action for swift investigations into the killings and mysterious deaths and also ensure the restoration of peace in conflict areas.
