The call for action, dated January 10, 2025, was addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
The letter, signed by Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, outlines a directive from H.E. John Mahama to uncover the circumstances surrounding these tragic incidents. According to the statement, the deaths left “a lasting scar on our democratic process,” necessitating urgent action to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Key Recommendations
To ensure a comprehensive investigation, the following measures were proposed:
Establishment of a Dedicated Taskforce: A specialized team within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is to be formed, focusing solely on these cases.
Collaboration with Witnesses and Families: Thorough interviews with eyewitnesses, families of the victims, and other relevant individuals are recommended to gather critical information.
Review of Electoral Security Arrangements: An examination of the role and conduct of security personnel deployed during the elections is deemed essential.
Use of Forensic Evidence: Advanced forensic techniques, including the analysis of physical evidence such as bullet casings and weaponry, are encouraged to ensure a detailed investigation.
Collaboration with Electoral and Civic Bodies: The letter urges cooperation with the Electoral Commission and related agencies to review reports from both elections for additional insights.
