President Mahama deserves praise; he’s made goods cheaper – Dr. AyerakwaDevelopment Economists and a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Hayford Mensah Ayerakwa, is throwing shade at critics of President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
Speaking on Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, he highlighted that Ghanaians should praise the president for doing an excellent job, citing improvements in indices such as inflation, GDP growth, employment, and interest rates.
Dr. Ayerakwa pointed out that, while the country’s economy has grown, citizens are not reaping the benefits. He linked the country’s growth to human growth, emphasizing that it is only the first step toward development.
“So far, we can see a growth in the indicators when comparing 2025 growth to that of 2024. The inflation rate dropped from 23% to 5%, and items are getting cheaper. We should appreciate and glorify the government for their efforts,” he said.
He linked previous issues to COVID-19 and the Ukraine crisis, both of which impacted global supply chains and food prices. That being said, when the pandemic (Covid) struck, Ukraine began their conflict, which harmed the country’s economic growth because it was where the country imported goods and foodstuffs such as oil and grains.
“We are urging the government to put in place a system that encourages domestic production to be international; otherwise, they are collapsing, and you cannot build your economy on imports; otherwise, you are laying a risky and dangerous foundation because if an accident occurs right now, the entire structure will collapse. We must celebrate the president’s efforts.”Dr. Ayerakwa urges.
