President John Dramani Mahama has met with Civil Society Organisations, faith-based leaders, and mining associations at the Jubilee House on Friday, 3rd October, 2025 to discuss practical strategies for ending illegal mining in Ghana.
At the meeting, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), presented government’s comprehensive plan to tackle the menace, highlighting five key interventions — strengthening law enforcement through NAIMOS, reforming the licensing regime, restoring degraded lands under the Tree for Life initiative, cleaning polluted water bodies with the Blue Water Guards, and formalizing small-scale mining through rCOMSDEP.
Hon. Buah noted that these reforms, championed under President Mahama’s leadership, are already showing results, with reclaimed forests and improved water quality in several regions. He reaffirmed government’s determination to sustain the fight until Ghana’s rivers and forests are fully restored.
Civil society groups commended government’s renewed efforts but urged stronger enforcement and transparency. The Minister assured them of continued collaboration, emphasizing that their vigilance and partnership remain vital to achieving a sustainable and responsible mining sector.
