Accra, Tuesday, September 23, 2025** —
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. The nomination, made in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, has been submitted to the Council of State for consideration.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, brings to the role a distinguished judicial career marked by diligence, integrity, and service across various levels of the judiciary — from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, and currently, the Supreme Court.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has made “invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence” and is widely respected for his intellect, impartiality, and commitment to justice.
The statement further emphasized that his wealth of experience and long-standing service on the Bench make him “eminently qualified” for the high office of Chief Justice.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination is expected to go through the constitutional process, including consultations and vetting, before his appointment is finalized.
