Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) national chairman, has made it clear that the party has no intention of running President John Dramani Mahama for a third term. He has also emphasized the party’s complete adherence to Ghana’s constitutional requirements.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah responded to rumors regarding internal party succession plans and President Mahama’s political destiny by restating the NDC’s adherence to democratic government and constitutional term limitations.
“We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” he said. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”
His comments coincide with growing speculation about the potential successor to President Mahama when his current term ends in 2029, with Asiedu Nketiah and other prominent NDC officials becoming the subject of such rumors.
When asked about his own aspirations to become president, Mr. Nketiah advised against making snap decisions, stating that early campaigning could jeopardize the goals and accomplishments of the current administration.
“The party has not declared anything,” he noted. “I keep repeating my caution that we have to be very careful about the way we express our ambitions. Whoever succeeds President Mahama will ride on the achievements of the current government.”
He emphasized that premature succession planning could undermine the government’s program and hurt the party’s chances of winning elections.
“If you conduct yourself in ways that will disrupt the activities of this government in ways that will make the government less successful, then you have a bigger problem,” he said. “President Mahama is only about eight months in office now, and you want to struggle to decide who will replace him—you know what it can cause.” He stated.
