CCAL PRESS STATEMENT ON THE NAIMOS OPERATION ON THE BIRIM RIVER
Date.6th Dec,2025
Location..kibi
Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape (CCAL) wishes to commend the National Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce (NAIMOS) for their recent operation leading to the seizure of equipment polluting the Birim River. Their swift action demonstrates commitment, courage, and readiness to confront one of the gravest threats to our national heritage.
However, CCAL is equally concerned that while equipment was seized, the individuals behind the operations were neither pursued nor apprehended. This gap creates the dangerous impression that illegal miners can easily regroup, re-mobilize, and return to the same environmental destruction with renewed energy. A one-off operation,no matter how dramatic, cannot stop a crisis that has become systemic and deeply organized.
Galamsey is no longer a casual practice by a few; it is a well-structured network. Ghana cannot continue responding with isolated raids involving only a small fraction of our trained security forces and putting their very lives on the line while a larger, fully capable national defense establishment stands ready and underutilized. If we can mobilize effectively to protect borders, we can do the same to protect the sources of life for millions of Ghanaians.
Furthermore, reclaiming lands, planting trees, and desilting river channels ,though noble, amount to little when active illegal mining continues unchecked. It is like sweeping a room while leaving the windows open for dust to blow in.
For decades, environmental indiscipline, negligence, and impunity have persisted with unprecedented boldness. If decisive and sustained actions are not taken immediately, Ghana risks losing priceless natural assets, jeopardizing water security, biodiversity, and the prosperity of future generations.
CCAL therefore calls on the Government of Ghana to declare a State of Environmental Emergency.
This is not an exaggeration,it is a national necessity. Our rivers are dying, our forests shrinking, and our communities are threatened. Posterity will judge us not by our speeches, but by the actions we took when the rivers cried out for help.
CCAL stands ready to support the government, chiefs, security agencies, and all stakeholders in safeguarding the Atewa landscape and every natural resource that defines our national identity.
Together, let us end this menace once and for all.
