The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the Central Region have cautioned government with a firm stance to oppose its decision to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
TUC has observed that government’s attempt on the privatization of ECG, will offer no lasting solution to the country’s energy crisis, acknowledging the multiplicity of challenges facing the energy and electricity sector of the economy.
The Union made the assertion at the 2025 Regional May Day celebration held in Cape Coast on Thursday on the theme, “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders.”
Speaking at the occasion, Ms. Cynthia Aba Sam Ananoo, the Central Regional TUC Secretary highlighted that the high energy sector debt, threatens the sustainability of the sector and the overall physical stability of the country.
She noted that though TUC shares in the demand for an energy sector reform. It doesn’t subscribe to the proposed privatization of ECG as a solution to the energy sector challenges, even though Ghanaians sort to pay high electrical tariffs compared to their income levels.
Ms. Cynthia Aba Sam Ananoo further urged government to shelve the idea of privatizing ECG, as organized labour will forever resist any such move. Admonishing that a proper diagnosis to the energy sector will show that privatizing ECG is never the solution, but will rather compound more problems on Ghana and Ghanaians.
Hon. Ekow Okyere Panyin Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister who graced the occasion together with a host of other dignitaries, commended workers for their dedicated service in sustaining the development of the country over the years. Coupled with their support to government’s effort to put the country’s economy on sound footing and reduce the hardship confronting Ghanaians.
He again appealed on organized labour to resort to dialogue to demand better working condition for workers and expressed the conviction that government and organized labour resolves all labour disputes amicably through negotiations and constructive dialogues.
Emmanuel Lumor, the Central Regional ECG Manager following his honorary award received at the event for his relentless effort undertaken to improve stable power supply, expressed delight for the recognition and assured that customers are yet to experience the best of power supply from ECG-Central Region.
The Regional ECG Manager echoed that efforts are in place to upgrade the main transformer supplying the Region’s power by August-September to stabilize power supply in the Central Region in addition to the over 200 transformers injected into the Region and carry out maintenance works on their feeders and also replace all faulty meters within the Region.
