Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, the current Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) for General Assembly will bring his five years’ Moderatorial tenure of office to an end this year on November 30, 2023 for a new Moderator to take over.
Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, the new Moderator will take over from Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Yeboah Mante as Moderator to head the general assembly.
PCG has elected Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye as new moderator during the 23rd general assembly meeting at the Ramseyer Congregation at Abetifi-Kwahu in the Eastern region.
In a pastoral letter, Rt. Rev. Joseph Yeboah Mante said that he will bring his Moderatorial tenure of office to an end this year on midnight November 30, 2023.
The general assembly, being the highest decision making body of PCG, brought together about 300 commissioners and corresponding members from all the (twenty-one) 21 presbyteries to discuss together the will of God to the Church during the 23rd general assembly meeting under a theme: Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 21:6).
A brief history about outgoing Moderator, Rt. Rev. Yeboah Mante
Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, PhD is the 18th Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. He is the Chancellor of the Presbyterian University Ghana, Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, and a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches.
He has been a Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for over four decades, out of which two and half decades were spent training Ministers and lecturing at the Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon (TTS).
He has held pastoral positions in Presbyterian Churches in Adum (Kumasi), Obuasi (District Minister), Claremont (California), Pomona (California), Fontana (California), Trinity United Church (Legon), Atomic Hills Congregation (Accra) and Faith Congregation at Shiashie. He was also the President of the National Ministers’ Conference for seven years.
He was also a key member of the Church’s Committee on Ministry for fifteen years, and was part of the team that revised the Church’s Liturgy Books, Constitution and Manual of Order. Rt. Rev. Prof. Mante once served as the Chairperson of the Akuapem Presbytery.
Rt. Rev. Prof. Mante is the immediate past President of the TTS and has served on the Boards of twenty-one organizations (twelve of them being Boards and Councils of High/Higher Education). These include chairing the Governing Councils of Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong and Presbyterian Women’s College of Education, Aburi.
He has served on Governing Councils of the Presbyterian University College, Ghana and the Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission and Culture, Akropong-Akuapem.
Rt. Rev. Prof. Mante was a member of the National Accreditation Board of the Republic of Ghana (2011-2018) and is a member of the American Academy of Religion, British Ethics Society, Society for the Study of Theology, UK and is on the Editorial Board of the Trinity Journal of Church and Society.
Rt. Rev. Prof. J. O. Y. Mante served as the 2004 General Council International Coordinator of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches with Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland (now World Communion of Reformed Churches in Hannover, Germany), and has also served as an Executive Committee member of the Christian Council of Ghana since 2011.
He was the Chairman of the Eminent Persons Group of Religious Leaders that was formed in 2020 to monitor the 2020 Elections in Ghana.
He has had international exposure in several countries around the world”.
His areas of specialization include: Ethics, Ecological Theology, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophical Theology, Systematic Theology and Church/Organizational Leadership, and has published eight books and several academic articles in refereed journals.
Rt. Rev. Prof. J. O. Y. Mante is a member of the Board of Adom Partnership International based in California, USA. He once hosted the GTV program, “In the Light”. Rt. Rev. Prof. Mante is married to Mrs. Florence Mante and they are co-founders of the Adom Foundation Ghana, which is an NGO which supports over four hundred children and students in school every year.
