Professor Kwame Osei Kwarteng has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to cancel the rotational hosting of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations across the 16 regions, arguing that financial concerns should not be the sole reason for the decision.
Speaking on Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on Monday, February 17, 2025, Professor Kwarteng challenged the rationale behind Mahama’s move.
He pointed out that if the former President Akufo-Addo’s approach to celebrating Independence Day was seen as financially burdensome, then Mahama should also reconsider his own travel expenditures for international meetings. According to him, the cost of presidential travel is equally significant and should not be overlooked.
Professor Kwarteng further addressed concerns about students and security personnel collapsing during the celebrations, a recurring issue over the years.
While acknowledging the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to the sun during the ceremonies, he maintained that this should not serve as an excuse to discontinue the regional rotation.
He emphasized that such occurrences have long been a part of Ghana’s Independence Day traditions and should not be a decisive factor in scrapping the initiative.
The decision to end the regional rotation has sparked debate among political analysts and citizens, with some agreeing that it would save costs, while others believe it undermines national unity and inclusivity.
As discussions continue, many await further clarification from the government regarding how future Independence Day celebrations will be handled under President Mahama’s administration.
